Clinical Studies and Documentation – EDTA Chelation
The TACT 1&2 Trials concluded in 2012 in the United States and Canada at 86 locations. The purpose of the study was to determine the safety and effectiveness of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic (EDTA) chelation therapy in people with coronary artery disease.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the synthetic amino acid, ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA), as a pharmaceutical agent for the treatment of lead and other heavy metal poisoning and specific mineral overloads.
In older literature, EDTA was also approved for intravenous treatment as possibly effective in vascular disorders, arrhythmias, atrioventricular induction defects and in the treatment where calcium tissue deposits or hypercalcemia may contribute other than those listed.
However these possibly effective indications were removed from FDA approved literature in the late 1970’s for reasons known only to the FDA. No explanation was given.
Fortunately, Doctors and alternative practitioners are not limited solely to approved procedures and may prescribe for whatever conditions they find to be effective.
Consequently, since Chelation is approved for the treatment of heavy metal poisoning (especially lead), many doctors, clinics and private practitioners continue to use Chelation Therapy with great benefit in many diseases and conditions other than their officially approved uses.
Following the same path as the United States. In the UK, the National Health Service (NHS) and official health bodies approve chelation therapy for specific medical conditions such as heavy metal poisoning and iron overload.
Official NHS Uses for Chelation
- Iron Overload: Used for conditions such as thalassaemia, sickle cell disease, or haemochromatosis when regular blood removal is unsafe or not possible. [1, 2, 3]
Metal Poisoning: Managed via the UK National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) for severe lead, mercury, or other acute toxic exposures. [1, 2]
Unofficial and Alternative Uses for Chelation.
- Heart Disease and Autism: Official UK bodies do not recommend or endorse IV chelation therapy for treating heart disease, atherosclerosis, or autism.
- Private Clinics: Some private clinics offer intravenous “heavy metal detox” packages, however these lack backing from mainstream medicine.

EDTA Has Multiple uses as a food additive
In addition to its remarkable pharmaceutical uses, Ethylene-diaminetetraacetic-acid is also approved as a food additive that is generally recognized as safe (GRAS).
It’s array of biochemical properties make it extremely valuable as a food additive.
It has the ability to: (1) bind with many metals; (2) act synergistically with other antioxidants to stabilize fats and oils; (3) prevent discoloration of potato products; (4) stabilize vitamins; (5) prevent discoloration of fish and shellfish; (6) prevent flavor changes in milk; (7) inhibit the thickening of stored condensed milk; (8) enhance the foaming properties of reconstituted skim milk; (9) prevent color changes of scrambled eggs prepared from egg powder; (10) preserve canned legumes; (11) prevent gushing in beer; (12) promote flavor retention and delay loss of carbonation in soft drinks; (13) prevent oxidation of meat products; and (14) prevent discoloration of canned fruits and vegetables.
