What is Krill Oil?
The Krill is a shrimp like crustacean which is around 1 to 6 cm long, they are found in the colder oceans of the world namely the Antarctic and North Pacific. The oil which is extracted contains high concentrations of Omega 3 fatty acids, this is one reason why it is becoming so popular.
In fish oil omega 3 fatty acids are found in trigliceride form where in Krill Oil thay are in a double chain phospholipid structure, this is the same structure as the fats in our own cell walls. There is also no aftertaste or “fishy burps” when you take Krill Oil.
Benefits of Krill Oil and how can it help to lower Cholesterol?
Over the last few years Fish Oil supplements with their Omega 3 benefits have widely dominated the market place as a natural way to reduce Cholesterol and support a heart health, but now there’s a new kid on the block that may soon surpass its fishy cousin.
Krill Oil (Euphausia Superba) has proved through test results to be more effective than fish oil for improving cardiovascular health together with a host of other important heath benefits, such as arthritic joint pain and the physical/emotional symptoms of PMS.
Note: There are many Krill Oil supplements available, not all have these benefits, there are over 85 species of Krill. The tests in this article only refer to Antarctic Euphausia Superba Krill Oil.
The study involved 120 men and women who were aged between 25 – 75 years, the results concluded that Krill Oil outperformed Fish Oil in reducing bad (LDL) cholesterol and high triglicerides, as well as increasing good (HDL) cholesterol.
The doseage amounts used in the study was 1-1.5 grams (2-3 Soft Gels) of Krill Oil which concluded that it was more successful in reducing Bad (LDL) cholesterol and triglicerides than three times the amount (3 grams) of Fish Oil.
At a higher dose (3 grams) of Krill Oil, it was shown also to reduce “Blood Triglicerides”, fish oil did not.
After 90 days the double blind study found the following;
Krill Oil Results:
Lowered Bad Cholesterol (LDL) levels by 34%
Increased Good Cholesterol (HDL) levels by 43.5%
Fish Oil Results:
Lowered Bad Cholesterol (LDL) levels by 4.6%
